Your Quick Guide to the UC Berkeley Haas MFE Application

By Diane Nguyen

Applying to a graduate program can feel overwhelming, but we've got you covered. This guide provides a quick overview of the application process for the UC Berkeley Haas Master of Financial Engineering (MFE) program, so you can confidently submit your best work.

What We Look For in an Applicant

The Berkeley MFE program is a direct path to careers in quantitative finance, including research, trading, and data-driven investing. We're looking for applicants who are ready to join a community of brilliant peers and faculty. Authenticity matters—we want to know your unique story, your strengths, and why now is the right time for you to pursue an MFE degree.

We also have a set of Defining Leadership Principles at Haas: Question the status quo, Confidence without attitude, Students always, and Beyond yourself. We encourage you to reflect on these as you prepare your application.

Application Requirements

To apply, you'll need to submit the following materials. For detailed prerequisites and test score information, please visit our admissions website.

  • Resume: One page is recommended.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all universities you've attended.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters are required.
  • Test Scores: We require GRE or GMAT scores, with a waiver option available for some applicants. TOEFL or IELTS scores may also be required for some international applicants.
  • Essays: This includes a video essay and short essays with prompts provided in the application.

The Interview Process

The interview is an opportunity to show us your quantitative skills and share your story one-on-one. Our interviewers are MFE alumni who understand the application process. Expect questions that test your:

  • Problem-solving and quantitative reasoning
  • Coding capabilities (Python & C++ are recommended)
  • Communication skills

A great way to prepare is by practicing these concepts and doing mock interviews with a friend. When you're in the interview, think out loud and explain your process for each question. This helps us understand your thought process.

Submitting Your Application

We use rolling admissions, meaning we review applications as we receive them. The sooner you submit, the better, as decisions are typically processed within nine weeks. Before you apply, make sure you've:

  • Secured your letters of recommendation: Having both letters ready for submission is key to a smooth review process.
  • Taken or scheduled your GRE/GMAT: While you can apply without scores, it's best to have a test date lined up.
  • Updated your resume: Be sure it includes your most recent professional or academic experience.

Ready to take the next step?

Your journey to joining the Haas and MFE community starts now. We encourage you to submit your application as soon as you are ready.
