Opportunities to Think About

Opportunities are growing at the SEC, OCC, the OFR and the CFTC, and the jobs posted are extremely interesting and intellectually challenging for graduates from the best finance programs. In the current environment, these job opportunities are good alternatives to traditional investment bank positions. However, for all of these positions to attract or retain good people, it is necessary to offer attractive salaries relative to the compensation package and job insecurity which goes with jobs in investment banks. My proposition is the following: Offer those who help regulate the firms a portion of any fines imposed against the firms who engage in unethical behavior. If this does not happen, then the (low) rewards will mean that young bright graduates will learn the ropes of investment banking during their short tenure at a regulatory agency before being hired by the banks they inspected. It is a win-win situation for investment banks which have the opportunity to pick the best brains and hire people who will help them to deal and communicate with the regulators. I am hoping to play a role on making these organizations realize that it is in their best interest to do so.
