MBA Internships: New Island Capital Management

Student: Paul Maa, MBA 13.

Interning with: New Island Capital Management, Private Equity, San Francisco.

Thrilled because: "I have experience in both private equity and social venture and went to business school specifically to explore ways to marry these two areas." Maa says New Island is the perfect fit because it’s a mission-focused investment firm, "meaning that it's 100% for-profit, but also 100% impact-driven."

Can't believe he's getting to: "Meet with the CEOs and founders of startups that I admire, bring a deal through the investment committee process, and research an industry I’m personally interested in--for work!

Already he's learned: "You don't have to sacrifice your values to work in the investment field."

The Berkeley MBA toolkit: Maa says New Island's goal is to transform the way natural resources are used, businesses are built and communities thrive, calling this "a daily exercise in Questioning the Status Quo.” He notes that transformation doesn’t come without challenging whether or not there is a better way of doing things.

Inside New Island: Maa says summer associates are treated entirely like full-time employees. "I'm fully involved in deals, investment committee meetings, company pitches, etc. – it’s been an internship experience unlike any other I've gone through."

Advancing career goals by: "Getting exactly the exposure to impact investing I was hoping to have."
