Doc Jobs: A Winning Plan to Open Career Paths for Physicians


A team of Berkeley MBA students outlined a bold plan for motivating patient-care physicians in the teaching hospital environment and claimed second prize in a national case competition.

Full-time MBA students Francisco de Carvalho and Lorenzo Cirio (visiting from LSE), both MBA 12, and Robert Bogolub, Jessica Felts, and Bundit Praditsuktavorn, all MBA 13, earned their bragging rights at the National MBA Human Capital Case Competition, held at Vanderbilt’s Owen School, Oct. 27-29. The Berkeley MBA team beat out nine others, including Columbia and Cornell.

Not bad for their first foray into this competition, notes Bogolub, who says the Leading People course heightened the team's appreciation for the importance of people to well-functioning organizations. Applying lessons on motivation from this class, the team built their proposal around the theme of Align, Assist, and Advocate to address a case on motivating non-tenured clinicians in a university hospital structure that rewards teaching and research.

“Our suggested solution included redesigning the promotional track and requirements for clinicians. Instead of emphasizing a research-driven tenure track, we wanted clinicians to be promoted based on their clinical work," says Bogolub. The team also proposed that these doctors receive assistance in the form of mentoring and career conferences and advocacy through an alumni program that would connect them with opportunities at other hospitals—providing incentive and building a reputation for the case hospital as a “talent factory.”

Bogolub says judges (from GE and Deloitte’s human capital practice) liked the boldness of the Haas plan and notes that having experienced consultants on the team (de Carvalho and Cirio) made for a highly polished presentation. The team took home $3K, not to mention new Nashville-honed line dancing skills.
