Green Day for eBay

MBA Students Generate Energy Savings for Corporate Clients

For Megan Rast, thinking small resulted in the potential for large energy gains at eBay. Rast and fellow MBA 11 classmate Joey Barr were among 51 MBA students nationwide to participate in EDF Climate Corps, which dispatched students to corporate clients this summer to spend 10–12 weeks generating energy efficiency plans.

Rast went to work at San Jose’s eBay and Barr at Shorenstein Realty Services in San Francisco. Each identified potential carbon emission reductions of some 5,000 tons and savings of more than $1M for their respective clients. Rast did so by thinking small: Upon discovering that eBay had just unveiled a highly efficient new data center, she shifted focus to the daily hum of tens of thousands of individual computers, discovering a significant energy drain. Her recommendation to team energy-efficient equipment with behavior-changing power management software yielded the potential for big payoff.

Rast blogged about her Climate Corps experiences for She was also featured in this December 11 story on ABC7 TV.
