Students Supporting Social Impact

     

Marina Boleda, MBA/MPH 13, will spend her summer internship working in Lesotho with the Clinton Foundation to bring doctors to rural areas and improve nutrition for children.

Boleda’s internship choice is feasible thanks to the Haas Social Impact Award (HSIA), which provides financial help for MBA students interning with organizations that serve the public interest. The award is entirely student-run and made possible by donations from the Berkeley-Haas community.

This year the award fund raised $25,300, with 54 percent of first-year MBA students pledging or donating to help their classmates with basic living expenses. Eight students received HSIA awards at an average of $3,134.

“The award provides nonprofits or social enterprises access to MBA talent that they could not otherwise afford,” says Aaron Perez, MBA 13, who manages the HSIA in his role as MBAA VP of Community. “It also gives students with a passion for social impact the opportunity to determine what role the social sector will play in their personal and professional lives.”

Among this year’s HSIA recipients: Sam Henderson, who is working to increase engagement of Medicare beneficiaries with the Bronx’s Montefiore Medical Center; Julie Lutz, who is working with Tegu, a socially responsible toy company founded to address the need for entrepreneurship in Honduras; and Kathryn Doyle, who is writing a research paper for the World Wildlife Fund on investment opportunities emerging from a global transition to sustainable soft commodities.

As for Boleda's summer, "I'll be working with the Clinton Health Access Initiative to conduct a capacity assessment of the Lesotho Flying Doctor Service and working in collaboration with the World Food Program to implement a nutrition project," she says. "This opportunity would not have been possible without the Social Impact Award."
